Following the remarks of Justice Grunis about many judges becoming bitter and burnt-out, Attorneys Oron Schwartz and Yogev Narkiss, who head Ono Academic College’s Criminal Defense Litigation Clinic offer a possible solution. Perhaps it would be worthwhile to consider a completely different model: Judges are appointed, at least in certain areas, for a limited period, either alone or alongside veteran judge. Perhaps, being a judge need not be a career, but a public services, and the community of lawyers needs to sign-on for the task. Perhaps, the ultimate ‘jury,’ without the evils imported from America, would be a lawyer appointed ad hoc, similar to the public representatives in the Labor Courts today. Why shouldn’t courts consist of two judges and a third chosen from among the community of lawyers? Why shouldn’t another voice be heard? Why can’t their presence and weight counterbalance an inattentive judge? This proposal could be a solution, especially considering the burnout suffered by judges and declining public confidence in the courts.”
