“The Day After: Key challenges for Israel and the Diaspora following the Hamas-Israel War”

The first installment of the “Conversation Corner,” a panel discussion series organized by Ono Academic College and the Jerusalem Post, took place on January 20, 2024. It addressed the issue, “The Day After: Key challenges for Israel and the Diaspora following the Hamas-Israel War”. Participants included Prof. Tova Hartman, Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences at Ono Academic College Dr. Adi Brender, Director of the Research Department at the Bank of Israel, and Brig.-General (Ret.) Yossi Kuperwasser, former head of the IDF Defense Intelligence Analysis Division and Director General of the Strategic Affairs Ministry. Kuperwasser suggested Israel was winning the war but cautioned about Hamas’ underground infrastructure in Gaza. Post-war, Israel will need to decide on the extent of control over Gaza. Brender highlighted economic repercussions, depending on military and political outcomes. He noted the impact on border areas, construction sector, and tourism industry. Hartman discussed trauma in Israeli society and the Diaspora, emphasizing “assumptive trauma” and unexpected antisemitism. She highlighted national solidarity in Israel as a source of resilience. Overall, the conversation addressed military, economic, and psychological challenges post-war.
