Ranan Hartman, CEO and founder of Ono Academic College, shared his thoughts on the issue of “sharing the burden” in a column in the daily newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth. He was prompted to write because this issue  has become a major obstacle to constructing a new coalition. Hartman raises several questions: “Why do large sections of the Israeli public, particularly ultra-Orthodox (Haredi) Jews and ‎Arabs, not consider “Israeli” part of their self-definition? Why don’t they identify with ‎the State and consider themselves obligated to contribute to it?‎ Can we honestly say that while demanding equal obligations we are also willing to grant rights and share hegemony with Haredim and Arabs?” In conclusion, Hartman calls on Israel’s leaders, “Tell the public that immediate solutions are not possible and that achieving an equal distribution of the burden cannot be achieved through legislation or a new “outline plan” but rather through a complex, ongoing educational process."
