Ono Scholar Discusses Psychological Aspects of Muscle Soreness After Exercise

Ono Academic College Senior Lecturer, and former professional basketball player, Dr. Assaf Lev was recently interviewed for the “Three that Know” radio program on the Kan Tarbut Network. Lev recently completed research into the psychological aspects of Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) that sometimes follows intense exercise and weight training.  He noted that while DOMS is painful, some athletes get psychological pleasure from it because it signifies to them successful training. In fact, in some cases, athletes who do not experience DOMS believe (possibly mistakenly) that the workout was not valuable.  Lev noted that there is a frequently-heard training maxim, “No pain – No gain” that explains the expectations surrounding experiencing DOMS.

Lev discussed his own experience as a professional basketball player when he noted that having pain from training was a source of pride.
