International Holocaust Remembrance Day, observed annually on January 27th, commemorates the victims of the Holocaust, in which six million Jews and millions of others were systematically murdered by the Nazi regime during World War II.
January 27th was chosen as International Holocaust Remembrance Day because it marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration and extermination camp, by Soviet troops in 1945.
