In this video, Rabbi Dr. Sharon Shalom, founder and director of the International Center for the Study of Ethiopian Jewry at Ono Academic College, shares “10 Facts About Sigd You Should Know.”
A biblical holiday mentioned in the Book of Nehemia, the practice of Sigd was preserved by the Bete Israel community of Ethiopia. It symbolizes the longing for Jerusalem and the renewal of the covenant between the people and God through fasting, prayer, and communal gatherings on mountaintops facing Zion.
Today, Sigd is recognized as an official Israeli holiday, celebrated nationwide and embraced as a moment of reflection, gratitude, and unity. In Kiryat Gat, where the video was filmed, and where Rabbi Dr. Shalom is a pulpit rabbi, the celebration reflects how this historic tradition has become a living bridge between the heritage of Beta Israel and the shared identity of the modern State of Israel.
