The Sages have noted that T\u201du Bishvat is New Year\u2019s Day for Trees. In Israel and the Mediterranean basin, the rainy season reaches its peak around the time of the holiday.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a reasonable question to ask: Why do we celebrate a holiday for trees?<\/p>\n<p>Well, it is a wonderful opportunity to express our thanks for the wonderful flowers and fruit that the trees produce.\u00a0 The Torah itself brings comparisons between human kind and the plant world.\u00a0 In Deuteronomy it is written, \u201cFor man is like a tree of the field\u201d (20:19). The Torah celebrates the fruitful bounty of the Land of Israel: \u201cIt is a land with wheat and barley, vines and fig trees, pomegranates, olive oil and honey\u201d (Deuteronomy, 8:8).<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Estimable T\u201du Bishvat customs include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Eating fruits together in a family setting, sometimes in the framework of a T\u201du Bishvat seder, modeled after the Passover Seder<\/li>\n<li>Hiking in nature and enjoying the beauty of the flora of the Land of Israel<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 15th day of the Hebrew month of Shvat is \u201cT\u201du Bishvat\u201d (Jewish Arbor Day).
