Isn’t a good year already sweet?
In this Rosh Hashanah reflection, he explores several ways of understanding this familiar blessing. Perhaps “good” is where we hope to arrive, while “sweet” describes how we experience the journey. Or perhaps sweetness is our ability to recognize and appreciate the good that is already present in our lives before it becomes something we take for granted.
The Hebrew word shanah also points us in two directions: toward repetition and preservation, but also toward change and renewal. The calendar may begin its cycle again, but we do not have to enter it as exactly the same people.
As the new year begins, perhaps we should ask not only what we hope the year will bring us, but what we hope to notice, preserve, and change within ourselves.
Shanah tovah u’metukah.
