Much to his surprise, when he arrived at the Beta Israel villages, the local community members did not believe he was Jewish. In fact, they feared he was a \u201cmissionary with intentions to tempt them towards Christianity.\u201d<sup>88<\/sup> But when Hal\u00e9vy mentioned Jerusalem (in passing), the community finally understood, and extended a warm welcome.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><em>At this point, students should be asked:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><strong>Why do you think the Beta Israel found it so hard to believe that Joseph Hal\u00e9vy was Jewish?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><em>Discussion here can focus on perception of \u201cothers\u201d in relation to ourselves. Then, drawing from their research, students should roleplay Hal\u00e9vy\u2019s first meeting with the Beta Israel and show the community\u2019s shift in perception and attitude when he finally mentions Jerusalem. After this, teachers should explain:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><strong>While Hal\u00e9vy\u2019s mission to extend Western Jewish outreach to the Beta Israel was successful, it yielded \u201cfew concrete results.\u201d<sup>89<\/sup> In the subsequent years, the Beta Israel suffered greatly from drought.<sup>90<\/sup> In fact, up to two-thirds<sup>91<\/sup> of the Beta Israel community died in [various] plagues.<sup>92<\/sup> No further Jewish missions to Ethiopia were arranged until 1904 (thirty-six years after Hal\u00e9vy\u2019s visit).
