Eldad HaDani claimed that he had come from a powerful and independent Jewish kingdom in East Africa, where the descendants of the lost Tribe of Dan had settled.<\/h3>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Here, teachers should give their students a copy of the text below to read. Once students have read the text, teachers should ask their students specific questions about the text and\/or explain its meaning<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>According to this testimony, the Tribe of Dan chose to exile itself prior to the Assyrian invasion of the northern kingdom, to avoid battle against the southern kingdom.<\/h3>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>This, Eldad HaDani said, is what brought the Tribe of Dan to the Land of Cush (an area generally understood to be the region of Ethiopia).<\/h3>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>It would be valuable for teachers to use a map to demonstrate the distance of travel between the Land of Israel and the Land of Cush (Ethiopia).<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"208\"><strong>Sefer Eldad HaDani &#8211; Story 2<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"200\"><strong>\u05e1\u05e4\u05e8<\/strong> <strong>\u05d0\u05dc\u05d3\u05d3<\/strong> <strong>\u05d4\u05d3\u05e0\u05d9<\/strong> <strong>&#8211;<\/strong> <strong>\u05e1\u05d9\u05e4\u05d5\u05e8<\/strong> <strong>\u05d1<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"208\">We have a tradition, passed down person to person, that we are<\/p>\n<p>the children of Dan &#8211; meaning we were initially in the Land of Israel and dwelt in tents and there was no greater warrior tribe among all the tribes of Israel than us. And when Yeravam Ben Nevat, who caused Israel to sin\u2026 made two golden calves, the kingdom of the House of David was divided. Let the students explain their answers, bringing into contemporary context if possible. Then tell them that a large group of Ethiopian Jews living in Israel believe, for the most part, that they are the descendants of the Tribe of Dan, just like Eldad HaDani. These Jews are called the Beta Israel, and most were brought to Israel in the 1980s and 1990s.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>At this point, we recommend that teachers show their students videos about Operation Moses (1984) Operation Solomon (1991).<sup>10<\/sup><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>9\u00a0 \u00a0As noted by Rabbi Sharon Shalom in <em>From Sinai to Ethiopia<\/em>, (Gefen Publishing House, 2016), p. 63: \u201cRabbi Zemach Gaon accepts ha-Dani\u2019s statements in principle and considers him a member of the tribes of Israel who preserve the ancient tradition of the Oral Torah. But most people do not believe HaDani\u2019s stories and consider him a fraud. Regardless of the truth of his statements, they ignite the hopes of many\u00a0Jews, who believe that the tribes of Israel have been found. His story has more significant influence in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, when other rumors and evidence of Jews in <em>Ethiopia <\/em>appear.
