This group was separated from the rest of its family at a time of political distress. To fully understand, let\u2019s look back at the biblical story of Jacob.<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Teachers can read the following information to their students, or suggest that the students read on their own and then research independently on the internet to understand the biblical stories referenced below:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>As you may know, one of the forefathers of the Jewish people was named Jacob. He was also called by a second name, Israel. Together with his four wives, Jacob\/Israel had twelve sons (and a daughter). <\/strong><em>The teacher may ask students if they know the names of the sons, or simply list them): <\/em><strong>The sons\u2019 names were Reuben, Simon, Levi, Judah, Dan,<sup>5<\/sup> Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Issachar, Zebulun, Joseph, and Benjamin.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>During Jacob\u2019s life, his sons often fought. But when Jacob died in Egypt, his sons came together. From then on, Jacob\u2019s twelve sons became the Twelve Tribes of Israel. Just as Jacob\u2019s family was only complete with 12 sons, the Jewish people were complete only with the presence of the Twelve Tribes.<\/h3>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Throughout ancient history, the Twelve Tribes traveled together. When the Israelites finally entered the Land of Israel, each was given a portion to plant roots and build their lives. As history progressed, the Twelve Tribes became divided. At that point, ten of the tribes formed a kingdom in the north of Israel, while the remaining two tribes maintained a kingdom in the south.<\/h3>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>It is recommended that teachers show students a map of the Biblical Land of Israel (next page), to demonstrate how the land was divided between the tribes in the northern and southern kingdoms.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-31008\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ono.ac.il\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/12\/Map-of-Tribes-of-Israel-215x300.jpg\" kingdom of Israel was conquered by the Assyrians, and over time, the Ten Tribes of that region were either exiled or assimilated into neighboring countries and cultures. <sup>6<\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The prophets, especially Prophet Isaiah, dreamed that one day these ten lost tribes would return to Israel.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"227\"><strong>Isaiah 11:11-12<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"181\"><strong>\u05d9\u05e9\u05e2\u05d9\u05d4<\/strong> <strong>\u05d9\u05d0\u05f3<\/strong><strong>:<\/strong><strong>\u05d9\u05d0\u05f3<\/strong><strong>&#8211;<\/strong><strong>\u05d9\u05d1\u05f3<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"227\">11.\u00a0\u00a0 And it shall come to pass that on that day\u2026 to acquire the rest of His people, that will remain from Assyria and from Egypt and from Pathros and from Cush<sup>7<\/sup> and from Elam and from Sumeria and from Hamath and from the islands of the sea.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>12.\u00a0\u00a0 And He shall raise a banner to the nations, and He shall<\/p>\n<p>gather the lost of Israel, and the scattered ones of Judah He shall gather from the four corners of the earth.<\/td>\n<td width=\"181\">\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u05de\u05b5\u05d0\u05b7\u05e8\u05b0\u05d1\u05b7\u05bc\u05e2 \u05db\u05b7\u05bc\u05e0\u05b0\u05e4\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea \u05d4\u05b8\u05d0\u05b8\u05e8\u05b6\u05e5.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>In the early rabbinic period, some expressed hope that these lost tribes would eventually return, but many others believed it would never happen. <sup>8<\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>The teacher should pause here and ask the students if they have any questions, and, whether they had heard of the Ten Lost Tribes before this lesson.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>5\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 For more information regarding the birth of Dan, see understood as Ethiopia, when mentioned in biblical reference<\/p>\n<p>8\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0See <em>Mishnah Sanhedrin 10:3 <\/em>which states that: \u201cThe ten tribes will not return [to the Land of Israel], for it is said, \u201cAnd He cast them into another land, as is this day\u201d (Deuteronomy 29:2): just as the day goes and does not return, so they too went and will not return. These are\u00a0the words of Rabbi Akiba.
