{"id":29964,"date":"2023-01-24T08:23:46","date_gmt":"2023-01-24T08:23:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ono.ac.il\/eng\/?post_type=news&#038;p=29964"},"modified":"2023-01-25T08:49:20","modified_gmt":"2023-01-25T08:49:20","slug":"ono-scholar-discusses-his-new-book-on-ethiopian-jewrys-oral-torah","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.ono.ac.il\/eng\/news\/ono-scholar-discusses-his-new-book-on-ethiopian-jewrys-oral-torah\/","title":{"rendered":"Ono Scholar Discusses His New Book on Ethiopian Jewry\u2019s Oral Torah"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Ono Scholar Discusses His New Book on Ethiopian Jewry\u2019s Oral Torah<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rabbi Dr. Sharon Zaude Shalom,\u00a0the founding director of Ono Academic College\u2019s International Center for the Study of Ethiopian Jewry, was interviewed on the Kan Heritage Radio Station by Mendy Bitan to discuss his new book entitled, \u201cA Living Geniza (Old Book Repository)\u201d.\u00a0The book\u00a0describes the unique process in which\u00a0Ethiopian Jewry\u00a0forged their own\u00a0Oral Torah, as distinct from the that, characterized by the Mishna and Gemara, studied by adherents of Rabbinic Jewry, like Sefardim and Ashkenazim.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The interview began by describing Rabbi Dr. Sharon\u2019s unique journey from a child in the village of Ethiopia to one of the premier researchers of Ethiopian Jewry in Israel today. He reviewed aspects of the new book,\u00a0published by\u00a0Lamda Scholarship, the imprint of Israel\u2019s\u00a0Open University. The\u00a0oral\u00a0tradition of Ethiopian Jews is 2500 years old. Like\u00a0the\u00a0oral\u00a0tradition\u00a0of rabbinic Jews, the Ethiopian \u201cTorah Shebeal Peh (oral teaching)\u201d can stand on its own and should not be undermined or underestimated, claims Rabbi Dr. Sharon.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rabbi Dr. Sharon illustrated the practical relationship of Ethiopian Jewry with contemporary Jewish law, in light of the divergent oral traditions, choosing an example of the law regarding eating milk and chicken together.\u00a0 Ethiopian Jewish \u201chalacha (Jewish law)\u201d permits it.\u00a0 While Rabbinic Judaism forbids eating chicken together with milk, a discussion in Mishna Hulin seems to indicate that the scholar Rabbi Yossi Haglili may have permitted it. Rabbi Dr. Sharon said that the majority of the customs practiced by Ethiopian Jewry and forbidden by contemporary Jewish law, were included in the Talmud.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On a personal level, Rabbi Dr. Sharon said that when he was studying for the Rabbinate, he stopped eating at his parents\u2019 home, convinced by his Rabbinic authorities that it was not Kosher enough.
