THE CENTER FOR HEALTH LAW AND BIOETHICS

The Center for Health Law and Bioethics

The dynamic pace and scope of developments in science, technology and medicine in recent decades has created complex legal and ethical issues, questions and controversies which effect our daily lives. The mission of the Center for Health Law and Bioethics, situated within the Ono Academic College Faculty of Law, is to teach, educate, research, formulate public policy and publish academic articles in the field of bioethics, from the perspective of various legal systems: Western, Israeli and Jewish. The Center for Health Law and Bioethics focuses on patients' rights, medical malpractice, organ donor and transplants, stem cell research, genetic research, end of life questions, public health issues and other bioethical concerns.

The Center for Health Law and Bioethics publishes the Journal of Health Law and Bioethics annually, which includes current quality research, updates and legislation in the field. The editors are prominent researchers from law, bioethics and medicine in Israel, among them Israel Prize laureates and senior medical and legal professionals in Israel.

The Center for Health Law and Bioethics also focuses on teaching core and elective courses to medical doctors and lawyers at Ono Academic College, in collaboration with the Israeli Medical Association, the National Institute of Epidemiology and Health Policy, Tel Aviv, Bar Ilan and Ben Gurion Universities, and hospitals throughout the country. Important international collaborations with the European Genetic Foundation, University of Vienna, European Cardiology Association and others further enhance the Center's portfolio of activities.

The Center for Health Law and Bioethics awards two annual post-doc fellowships, fellowships to students from abroad, and research scholarships to Ono Academic College graduates who continue their studies in health law and bioethics.

This year the Center for Health Law and Bioethics will host a Birthright Israel program for pre-med and pre-law students from the United States. Participants will visit medical and legal military and civilian facilities to discuss bioethical issues with experienced professionals and construct an ethics toolbox designed to help them make important decisions in their professional futures.

The Center for Health Law and Bioethics is a source of information to the media for judgments, litigation or other important newsworthy events.

Dr. Gil Siegal, MD LLB SJD, a health law Professor and a surgeon, chairs the Center for Health Law and Bioethics.
